ON SELF-APPROVAL OR THE LACK OF IT ~ Mark Twain

When people do not respect us we are sharply offended; yet deep down in his heart no man much respects himself.

A man cannot be comfortable without his approval.

If everybody was satisfied with himself there would be no heroes.

From his cradle to his grave man never does a single thing which has any first and foremost objective save one-- to secure peace of mind, spiritual comfort, for himself.

It may be called the Master Passion, the hunger for self-approval.

What do you call Love, Hate, Charity, Revenge, Humanity, Magnanimity, Forgiveness? Different results of the one Master Impulse: the necessity of securing one's self- approval.
